Over 20 years ago the Halifax Middle School in Halifax, Pennsylvania, worked together with the Hyde School in Bath, Maine, to adapt the Hyde School character education process to work in a public school setting. By organizing students into multi-age "Discovery Groups", and by designing activities to address students’ deeper needs, the Halifax Middle School has created a school culture that helps students to make better choices and to give the best of themselves to others. Through the Hyde Public School Solution, we learned that when we take care of the kids, the academics follow. Session participants will understand how to create a middle school culture of character through the use of multi-age Discovery groups, specially designed school-wide activities, and a common language that promotes character and conscience.

Untreated oral disease can lead to impaired social development, decreased ability to learn and focus, less favorable employability, lost time from school and work, and decreased productivity at all levels.
Dental caries (cavities) is the most prevalent chronic disease of children, with the greatest rates found among low-income families. Certain segments of the population continue to experience poor oral health even though tooth decay is largely preventable through regular dental checkups, the use of fluoride and sealants, and appropriate diet and oral health care.
School-based dental sealant programs have been shown to be a highly effective intervention that can improve children’s oral health for relatively low cost.
Stop by our table to pick up a toothbrush and talk with representatives from the PA Coalition for Oral Health and the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health about how we can work together to keep our kids healthy and smiling!
